About Furtados

Our Story since 1865

Our story begins in 1865. L M Furtado & Co, a retailer of print music and music instruments, was founded by Luis Manoel Furtado. B X Furtado & Sons, owned by his brother, Bernard Xavier Furtado, was established soon after. In 1905 both showrooms moved to their current location at Jer Mahal Estate a historic building at Mumbai’s (then Bombay) Dhobitalao.

In 1953, at just 26, John Gomes acquired B.X. Furtado & Sons through a public auction, and later purchased L.M. Furtado & Co in 1959, marking the beginning of his journey in the music business. Under his leadership, the company thrived despite import restrictions, establishing itself as a leading importer of printed sheet music for musicians, teachers, and students across India.

With a vision to create a central hub for Western musical instruments, Furtados became a trusted destination for the music community. Rooted in strong values and inspired by his Goan heritage, John Gomes built a legacy that continues to guide the company today.

From a single store in Mumbai, Furtados has grown into a network of 19 showrooms and multiple warehouses, offering top global brands, quality instruments, and music education support—carrying forward a legacy of over 150 years.
